With this patented measurement technology, the internal wall thickness and erosion of pipes can be measured without dismantling the pipes or their insulation. The measurements are performed using a remotely controlled robotic arm, which not only increases the safety of maintenance personnel and speeds up execution, but also allows the robot to memorize the inspection route so it can be repeated automatically later.
This enables companies to save substantial costs and continuously monitor pipe quality — without major plant shutdowns. Maintenance time can also be reduced by knowing the actual condition of the pipes. Typically, during a full shutdown, the insulation is removed, then the pipes are dismantled, and only then is their condition inspected. This is problematic because it increases total downtime due to the need for rapid reaction (e.g., whether the exact replacement pipe is in stock), and due to time pressure, not all materials can be removed in a way that allows them to be reinstalled later — meaning unnecessary waste may be generated.
